Stairs are covered by Building Regulations — rise, going, headroom and the gaps between spindles all have limits, and the gap rule matters if there are small children in the house. We work to those figures rather than copying whatever was there before.
A full replacement is not always needed. Cladding a sound existing flight in oak, or changing the spindles and handrail, changes the whole hallway for a fraction of a new staircase.
