01How we do it

How it is done

A creak is almost always a wedge that has dried out or a tread that has lost its glue block, and it is fixed from underneath where there is access and from the top where there is not. It is a small job that makes a house feel properly looked after.

Replacement spindles and newel posts are matched to what is there where the original profile is still available, and made to match where it is not. On the older stock around Birkenhead and south Liverpool the profiles are often not something you can buy.

Where a balustrade is being changed, the gap between spindles matters: current Building Regulations put a limit on it, and it is the one part of a staircase where getting it wrong matters more than how it looks.

What people ask.

Can a creaking stair be fixed without taking it apart?
Nearly always. If there is access underneath it is straightforward; if there is not it is done from the top and it still does not mean a new staircase.
Can you match old spindles?
Where the profile is still made, yes. Where it is not, they are made to match. Send a photograph and we will tell you which it is.
