Seaside stock and the sand problem
Hoylake and Meols sit directly behind the dunes and the north Wirral shore, and the single thing that separates joinery here from joinery three miles inland is windblown sand. It gets under thresholds, into door bottoms and into the gap under a skirting board, and it holds damp against timber for far longer than the weather alone would.
It matters most for flooring. A solid or engineered floor laid tight to a threshold in a house that gets sand through the front door every summer will take it in at that joint, so the detail at the door matters more here than almost anywhere. We fit a threshold that can be lifted and cleaned under rather than one sealed down permanently.
The Victorian and Edwardian houses
The older stock around Hoylake has the seaside version of period joinery: generous windows facing the light, wide window boards, and front doors with glazing that was never meant for this much weather. Interior joinery is usually in good order because these houses have generally been looked after, so the work is more often adding than repairing: wardrobes, alcove units, a utility fitted into a back room.
Meols has more interwar and postwar in among it, on wider plots, and those houses take a kitchen or a wardrobe job as a straightforward fit rather than a conservation exercise.
Access and tides
Parking near the front at Hoylake can be difficult in summer and on a tide that brings the walkers out, which is worth knowing when a delivery is being booked. Behind the front it is easy, and most of the roads take a van outside the door.
We work the deliveries around it rather than let a lorry sit on a double yellow. If you are on the front, say so when you enquire and it gets planned in.
