We are based in Moreton, so this is the one place on the Wirral we can usually get to the same week.

A few questions, photographs or drawings if you have them, and a written price after a look at the job.

Photographs help on a domestic job. On a commercial one the drawings are the quickest way to a real price. PDFs are fine.

Your enquiry goes straight to McGuinness Joinery. Send photos or drawings and we'll come back to you with the next step.

01Moreton

Also covering Lingham, Moreton Shore, Upton Road.

What Moreton houses are built like

Moreton is mostly interwar and early postwar, and that shows in the joinery. The bay-fronted semis off Upton Road and around Lingham went up between the wars with timber window boards, deep skirting and panelled doors, and a lot of them still have the original linings even where the doors have been changed twice. The later estates towards the shore are postwar, built faster, with thinner trim and standard openings that are easier to work with but rarely square after seventy years of settlement.

The practical difference is what you find when you take something off. In the interwar stock there is usually solid timber behind the skirting line and a lath wall that does not take a fixing where you want one. In the postwar houses it is more often blockwork, which takes a fixing anywhere but has frequently been skimmed over an old finish, so a wardrobe end panel has to be scribed rather than pushed up to it.

The work that comes up here

Kitchens and wardrobes more than anything else. Moreton semis have a decent-sized main bedroom with a chimney breast in it, and the alcoves either side are the single most wasted space in the house: a pair of built-in wardrobes floor to ceiling usually gets more hanging space than a double freestanding unit and gives the room back its floor.

After that it is doors and flooring. A lot of houses here still have the 1970s flush doors that replaced the originals, and changing them through a whole house in one visit works out far cheaper per door than one at a time.

Being low-lying and close to the Birket and the shore, damp in a solid floor is worth testing for before any wood flooring goes down. We test rather than assume, because the answer decides whether engineered boards will do or whether something else is the honest recommendation.

Getting to the job

Parking is generally straightforward on the estate roads and in front of the semis, which means materials come off the van at the door rather than being carried. That is not a small thing on a kitchen or a run of flooring, and it is part of why a Moreton job usually takes less time on site than the same job in Birkenhead or the Liverpool terraces.

Because we are local, a small job here does not have to wait for a full day to be worth turning out for. If you have a list of things that have been building up, it is worth sending them all at once.

03Our work

The kind of work we do.

Our own photographs, every one of them. They were not taken in Moreton: we only claim a job in a place when we can show it, and the captions describe what is in the picture and nothing else.

04Questions

Asked about Moreton.

Are you actually based in Moreton?
Yes. We work from home in Moreton and travel out from here, which is why Moreton and the surrounding Wirral is usually the quickest to get booked in.
Do you take on small jobs in Moreton?
Yes, and being local means we can. Put a list together rather than calling about one thing and a half day on site will get through most of it.
