Three different kinds of housing in two miles
Upton village still has some older property at its centre, the roads around it are interwar semis, and Woodchurch is a large planned estate built in the forties and fifties. Greasby and Frankby are mostly postwar and later detached and semi-detached on wider plots. Within two miles you go from lath and plaster to blockwork to modern timber frame, and the right way to fix something changes with it.
On the Woodchurch estate the houses were built to a standard and that is genuinely useful: once you have worked in one, the next one is familiar. The openings are consistent, the stairs are the same layout, and a set of fitted wardrobes designed for one bedroom will usually fit the same bedroom three streets away with minor adjustment.
What people ask for
Kitchens, and a lot of them. The postwar and estate housing here has kitchens that are small by current standards, and most of what we do is making the space work harder: full-height units to the ceiling, an appliance housing built around the actual appliance, and a worktop that turns the corner properly rather than stopping short.
After that it is wardrobes and flooring, with a steady amount of understairs work. Opening up an understairs cupboard and fitting it out properly is one of the best value jobs in a three-bedroom semi and it comes up constantly around here.
Being the next village along
Upton, Greasby and Woodchurch are a few minutes from Moreton, which means a site visit does not need a half day set aside and a forgotten length of architrave does not cost an afternoon. For smaller domestic work that is the practical difference between a job happening soon and a job happening eventually.
Parking and access are generally good: drives, wide estate roads and space to unload at the door.
Arrowe Park is the one place worth flagging. The roads around the hospital fill up early with staff and visitor parking, and on a weekday a van cannot always get near the house. If you are on one of those streets it is worth saying so, because an early start gets the materials in before the roads fill rather than after.

Our own photographs, every one of them. They were not taken in Upton: we only claim a job in a place when we can show it, and the captions describe what is in the picture and nothing else.
